IIT-JEE 2015: IITs may cancel the ‘top 20 percentile’ criteria for JEE Advanced

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considering relaxing the top 20 percentile criterion for eligibility for their engineering entrance exam, JEE Advanced.

The plan was suggested in the meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs last week.

Currently, for admission to any of the IITs, one needs to get an all India rank in JEE (Advanced) and also be in the top 20 percentile of the successful candidates of their state boards.

This change in the criteria is after many IITs complaining about deserving students not getting admissions due to differences in the marking scheme of various state boards.

This year, close to 240 aspirants could not get admission into any IIT this year despite a great score in JEE (Advanced) as they could not meet the percentile condition.

The alternative now being talked about is giving weightage to the student's board exam marks.

The final decision will be made in the meeting of the IIT Council on September 22. Smriti Irani, HRD minister, will also be attending this meeting.

Aamir Khan's 'PK' shooting in Nashik gets interrupted

The shooting of the film PK starring Aamir Khan was interrupted in Nashik, when the crew began its shoot at the famous Kala Ram Mandir on Monday, September 15, 2014.
According to trustee of Kala Ram Mandir Trust, Advocate Ajay Nikam, the shooting of the film PK starring Aamir Khan and directed by Rajkumar Hirani had commenced at the temple on Monday morning.
“The temple is a historic, heritage temple and filming or photography is strictly prohibited there. Notice boards announcing the prohibition are put up in the temple premises. Even the common visitor is not allowed to photograph”, said Adv Nikam.
When Adv Nikam objected to the shooting, the crew mentioned that they had already applied for permission to the temple trust on September 2, 2014, and one of the trustees had taken a fee of Rs 25,000 and allowed the shoot.
This matter turned out to be a case of miscommunication between the trustees. As it appears the said trustee who gave the oral permission did not put up the permission application on the meeting neither did he inform the other nine trustees. “Even the chairman of the trust did not know about the permission being given”, said Adv Nikam.
The shooting with Aamir Khan at Kala Ram Mandir was interrupted for a while. However, the trust board allowed the shooting to take place in what they said was a decision taken in the ‘interest of Nashik’.
“A renowned actor like Aamir Khan was shooting at the famous temple in Nashik. We did not want the industry to get a message that Nashik is unfriendly and also we thought that the temple will be seen all across through the film. So in the larger interest of Nashik we dropped the issue and allowed the shoot to continue”, stated Adv Nikam.
The film PK was already in the face of controversy due to the poster of the film.

IITs recommend change in UGC degree notification and relaxation in JEE Advanced exam criteria

See what Modi said :Click here

Sticking to their guns on the IIT-UGC row over four-year undergraduate courses, the IITs decided at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the IIT Council (SCIC) on September 12 that the UGC's July notification on recognised degrees should not come in the way of IIT degrees and it should instead be expanded to include IIT degrees. The SCIC recommendation will be taken up by the IIT Council that is scheduled to meet on September 22 under the chairmanship of the HRD Minister Smriti Irani.

That apart, a recommendation made by the IITs Joint Admission Board (JAB) to relax the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced- the exam that determines admissions to all 16 IITs will also be taken up at the IIT Council meeting. JAB has recommended an alternative to the percentile based IIT admission formula in view of legal wrangles and to ensure a level playing field for students from across states.

As of now only students who are among the top 20 percentile in their board examinations and have cleared the JEE Main examination are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. However, the JAB has now recommended that alternatively students who may have scored 75 per cent marks in their Class XII exams should also be seen as eligible for JEE Advanced. This will apply where the last cut off for top 20 percentile is more than 75 per cent marks.
Several students from Andhra Pradesh could not make it to IITs last year as while some had scored over 90 per cent they still could not be among the top 20 percentile- the issue even went to court. Reason being that some school boards are more generous in their marking system than others inadvertently putting their students at a disadvantage when it came to JEE Advanced that has started relying on percentile based screening mechanisms. CBSE also faced similar problems. The JAB is of the view that a relaxation is necessary to ensure that all candidates are at equal advantage when appearing for JEE Advanced.
On the UGC-IIT row, the Standing Committee said in its meeting last weekend that the controversy can and should be resolved at the level of the union Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) itself. While among ways to sort out the standoff were suggestions that the IIT Act, 1961 be amended to expressly mention that its provisions will override those of any other Act or law that may come in conflict-moving an amendment, however, can be rather lengthy process. Sources told India Today that the IITs are of the view that the issue can be sorted out by requesting UGC to expand its list of recognised degrees as put out in its July 5 notification, so that the IIT degrees are also included in it.
The UGC had sparked a furore when it suddenly shot off a communication to the country's 16 IITs last month asking them to ensure that the degrees they are offering are aligned to those recognised by them. Taking strong exception to the higher education regulator dictating degree specifics to them, the IITs had written to the Smriti Irani led HRD ministry complaining about what they viewed as interference in the IIT system.
The IITs are autonomous engineering institutes of national importance governed by The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 that lays down their powers, duties, framework for governance etc. They have argued that the UGC Act does not apply to them at all - with some IITs even refusing to take cognizance of the IIT communication. Several IITs may have to restructure or rename their four year Bachelors of Science (BS) programmes or dual degree programmes if the UGC directive is imposed on them.

Suicide strikes again in IIT

After 10 suicides in IITs between December,2013 to April, 2014 , this time in IIT Guwahati.
One 1st year student from IIT Guwahati ECE department committed suicide.
May his soul lay rest in heaven.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24.
I know that each life is unique and all live for different purposes and reason to end each life also unique but this is too much and 10 suicides in few months and all from IITs so something is definitely wrong with this system.(And none during summer vacation.)
Suicidal thoughts happen when the deep pain you're feeling seems impossible to overcome. It might hurt so much that committing suicide seems like the only way you can find some relief from the thoughts and circumstances that are troubling you.
Rejection is hard whether in love or real life. It's never easy to face failures. Many in this world have family problems. But everything has a solution. Suicide is not the solution of anything!.
This is life, it will have experiences which will make you a stronger person than before. The stronger you fall, the harder you will rise( like a batman)
If you have ever failed at any place in your life or disappointment then just imagine your self Maybe, after some 20 years, you'll be delivering a speech somewhere, telling,
Live for that dream now!
Understand that there are other options, even if you don't know what they are. Life can change around in single moment, and it's impossible to predict what's going to happen tonight, tomorrow morning, 48 hours from now. Options you didn't realize existed could appear, but if you commit suicide you'll never have the opportunity to choose them. Take it as a challenge and FIGHT HARD. WORK HARD and break the boundaries that stopped you from claiming what you wanted. And finally when you emerge victorious, SCREAM AT THE TOP OF YOUR VOICE. Always remember this, heros are not those who never fall, but those who rise up every time after they have fallen hard.

Thangjam Manorama: The Unnoticed Nirbhaya From Manipur; And Our Selective Outrage

December 16, 2012 – The entire nation was shocked at the brutal gang rape of a girl in Delhi. The disgruntled youth protested against the law and order situation for overlooking the safety of women in Delhi for many years. The result was effectual and all the 4 culprits were given death sentence. The voices we raised were heard and our hopes in law-enforcement agencies were restored. This is one side of outrage that we came across. What happens with the heinous crimes against women from marginalised communities?
The gang rape of “Thangjam Manorama” still remains under the hood. There are many tribal women who suffer a great deal and their voices are persistently unheard. Hers is one such case. On July 10 2004, Thangjam was picked up by security personnel of the Assam Rifles and later was found brutally raped and murdered. She was prosecuted for keeping grenade but at the time of arrest, there was no proof for it. Thangjam was not even given a chance to prove her innocence in the court. A few women in Manipur protested naked against the rape and murder of Thangjam. It was one of the most radical protests of our times by  Meira Paibis, a grouping of several women’s organisations in Manipur, who went naked and protested saying,“Indian Army Rape Us”. Since a woman’s body is used as a tool of oppression, they turned oppression back on its head by reclaiming the body. AFSPA has been under fire for many years now. Does AFSPA provide the “right to rape”? The need of the hour is to stand against the laws that give impunity to the armed and paramilitary forces. Any person found accused of sexual assault should be tried in a civilian court
What we fail to understand is that though we feel satisfied with the justice given to Nirbhaya, we are missing out an important element here – strict laws and regulations against sexual harassment. The barbaric treatment of adivasi women in our country is often overshadowed by the rape cases which make it “big” on news channels. We need to get to the depth of the situation and ensures safety of women in every corner of the country. With the recent development strategies by the government, we need to make sure that it reaches the untouched parts of the country. We need to challenge the laws which promote impunity in any manner.
We need to foresee a brighter future for the women in our country so that no woman has to think twice before raising her voice or stepping out of her home, even after the wee hours of the day. Though armed forces will always be treated with reverence for the support they provide, we can’t afford to lose the sight of such acts which question the very existence of the Armed Forces.

There Is One Kind Of Rape Which Is Still Legal In our country. And It’s Happening Right Now

We live in a country where rape and molestation are making headlines. Some  cases have even sparked international outrage. But there is one kind of rape that it is apparently legal. And what's more, it has long been doused in the name of culture and shame. In fact, it is considered to be the duty of good housewife to give in to  it.

We are talking about the rape that might be happening right next door, within the confines of a home that you might feel is a safe haven. But the good wife, whom you meet every morning in the park, or the one who comes to do your daily chores, might not tell you that it turns into hell for her every night.

We are talking about Marital Rape. Like child molestation, this is one of the most heinous sexual crimes in society. And yet, it is taken lightly by the our society. It  is the rape a married woman has to suffer silently at the hands of the man who is considered responsible for her safety.

By an outdated law devised during the British rule, the IPC does not identify rape by the husband as “rape” per se. In fact, it is only considered rape if the wife is under the age of fifteen and has been forced into a physical relationship.

Section 375 of the IPC states, "Sexual Intercourse or act by a man with his own wife, the wife not being under 15 years of age, is not rape." This insensitive law completely disregards the times when a wife is brutally molested by her own husband. This law is so ancient, it has not even been amended even after the legal age of marriage of a girl was increased to 18.

This is indeed a sad affair because a sexually frustrated country where marriage is only a license for men to have sex legally, the woman or wife is treated as an object to have sex with. A thing to use, rather than a human who has emotions, who feels pain and who deserves to be respected as a human being.

Most men do not tolerate their wife's refusal to give in to their  sexual needs. They feel it is their wives' duty to have sex with them, as they provide money and food for them and their children.

Society has even driven women into believing that it is their duty to give in to their husbands. This has stopped many women from turning to the law for help.  Even if a woman does turn to the law, it has no provision to safeguard the interest of a woman within her marriage. Once she is married, she is owned by her husband.

This glaring loophole implies that while a woman can protect herself against domestic abuse as well as violence and dowry with the help of the law, rape at the hands of her husband is not something that she will ever be able to protect herself against.

The attitude of the Government, towards the act of making marital rape a criminal offence, comes as another shock. The bill was presented, but it was challenged on the grounds that it will stress the ' family system' . And that may be an injustice.

What seems to be the real injustice here is the fact that one half of 'the family' is being oppressed. It is that half of the family, which actually takes care of the rest.  Isn't the purpose of a 'cordial family' already defeated then?

For the cause of humanity,  pls share this and  to make marital rape a criminal offence in your country. Share this with as many people as you can and make sure that no woman has to go through this silent suffering. Because no woman deserves to.
